Muncie, IN—The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, Inc. awarded $569,987 to 14 non-profit organizations during the first Quarterly Competitive Grant cycle of 2020.
The Community Foundation’s purpose is to improve the quality of life in Muncie and Delaware County for this generation and generations to come. Quarterly Competitive Grants are awarded to fund projects for which there is a demonstrable community benefit in one of the following areas of interest: arts and culture, human services, economic development, education, and community betterment.
The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, Inc. is a publicly supported philanthropic institution governed by a volunteer board of local citizens. The Foundation manages contributions donated by individuals, businesses, and corporations as a permanent community endowment.
Distributions from these funds are given back to the community in the form of grants to nonprofit organizations and agencies. To date, more than $54 million has been awarded to enrich the lives of the residents of Muncie and Delaware County.
A Better Way Services, Inc. received $65,000 (from The Unrestricted Fund of The Community Foundation, 5000th Charitable Fund, Inc. Fund, Bassett Family Fund, Pat and Jane Botts Fund, Gordon and Pam Cox Fund, Julian and Suzanne Gresham Fund, MutualBank Charitable Foundation Fund, and David and Mary Jane Sursa Fund) to defray the cost of providing advocacy and services for victims of domestic violence or sexual assault and their children, a 24-hour suicide hotline and a general crisis hotline.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Muncie received $60,000 (from the Esther Ball Fund, J. Robert and Joanne N. Baur Fund, John and Janice Fisher Unrestricted Endowment Fund, Jane E. Hughes Fund, Laura Stanley Keppler Fund, Francis Lafferty Fund, Michael O. and Nicole T. Lunsford Fund, Morris Youth Fund, Old National Bank Fund, Martin D. and Helen B. Schwartz Unrestricted Named Endowment Fund, and David and Mary Jane Sursa Fund) to support out-of-school programming to more than 300 youth in Muncie.
Bridges Community Services received $15,000 (from the Linda and Connie Gregory Fund, MutualBank Charitable Foundation Fund, Jim and Mary Rosema Fund, and Jeanne and John Smith Unrestricted Fund) for the addition of a part-time maintenance employee to assist in property management.
Cardinal Greenway Inc. received $37,500 (from The Unrestricted Fund of The Community Foundation, Stefan and Joan Anderson Unrestricted Fund, Gordon and Pam Cox Fund, John and Janice Fisher Quality of Place Endowment Fund, Mike and Cathy Galliher Fund, Mary Kate Pingry Fund, Hamer and Phyllis Shafer Fund, Gary and Amy Thomas Fund, and Mac and Lila Warrell Endowment Fund) for trail maintence including the purchase of a truck and trailer, as well as to offset maintenance staff salaries.
Cornerstone Center for the Arts received $50,000 (from The Unrestricted Fund of The Community Foundation, Gary Addison Fund, The Endowment for the Arts Fund, John and Janice Fisher Quality of Place Endowment Fund, Historic Preservation Fund, Jane E. Hughes Fund, Shafer/Muncie Power Products Legacy Fund, Kent Shuff and Steve Fennimore Fund, and Mary Jane Sursa Fund) to defray the cost of providing quality art education programs and to support the renovation of the E.B. Ball Auditorium.
Delaware Advancement Corp. received $100,000 (from The Unrestricted Fund of The Community Foundation, Edmund F. and Virginia B. Ball Fund, Economic Development Fund, and Beulah M. Frogge Fund) to support the operating efforts of the Vision 2021 Economic Development Plan.
Delaware County Soil and Water Conservation District received $20,000 (from the Ball Corporation Community Betterment Fund, J. Robert and Joanne N. Baur Fund, and Daniel and Catharine Stewart Fund) to match funds awarded by the EPA to address environmental problems in the Mississinewa River Watershed.
Greater Muncie, IN Habitat for Humanity, Inc. received $50,000 (from The Unrestricted Fund of The Community Foundation, Edmund F. and Virginia B. Ball Fund, and Louisa and Waldo Beebe Unrestricted Endowment Fund) to defray the cost of the 2020 housing program.
Hillcroft Services, Inc. received $15,187 (from the Bassett Family Fund, KAKATU Foundation/David and Joanna Meeks Fund, and Faye Wingate Fund) to expand the music therapy services by purchasing new instruments and equipment.
Home Savers of Delaware County received $60,000 (from The Unrestricted Fund of The Community Foundation, Day Star Center Fund, Leap Managed IT Fund, John and Katherine Littler Fund, Jeanne and John Smith Fund, Jeanne and John Smith Unrestricted Fund, and Wayne E. and Carolyn K. Thomas Fund) to provide urgent home repairs for low-income homeowners.
Muncie Symphony Orchestra received $17,300 (from the Morris Youth Fund, David and Mary Jane Sursa Fund, and Joseph and Janet Wilson Unrestricted Endowment Fund) to defray the cost of education programming like “Music on the Move” and the instrument petting zoo.
Shafer Leadership Academy received $15,000 (from the Beulah M. Frogge Fund, Gayle and Jeannine Harrold Fund, and MutualBank Charitable Foundation Fund) to provide scholarships for non-profit organizations and neighborhood association members and support for the non-profit executive directors group.
Urban Light CDC received $25,000 (from The Unrestricted Fund of The Community Foundation, Jane Harrell Buckles Fund, William and Margaret Dutton Fund, John and Janice Fisher Unrestricted Endowment Fund, Jeff and Beth Lang Fund, Mid-West Metal Products Fund, and Charles and Claudia Sursa Unrestricted Named Endowment Fund) to defray the cost of housing programs in Muncie’s South Central and Industry neighborhoods.
YWCA Central Indiana received $40,000 (from the Edmund F. and Virginia B. Ball Fund, Jon and Barbara Moll Fund, Hamer and Phyllis Shafer Fund, Jeanne and John Smith Fund, and Faye Wingate Fund) to defray the costs of the Emergency Shelter and C.O.T.S. Stay programs.
