By Heart of Indiana United Way Board of Directors—
MUNCIE, IN—At Heart of Indiana United Way, we are committed to building stronger, healthier communities where every individual and family has the opportunity to thrive. Indiana Senate Bill 2 (SB2), known as the Medicaid Matters bill, threatens that mission by putting thousands of Hoosiers at risk of losing their healthcare, including working families, children, andvulnerable populations who rely on Medicaid and the Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP).
If passed, SB2 could strip health coverage from over 14,000 people in Heart of Indiana United Way’s five- county region alone, disproportionately impacting low-wage workers, rural communities, people of color, and individuals with chronic health conditions. Many of these Hoosiers already face financial insecurity and significant health disparities, and losing coverage will force more families to rely on costly emergency care instead of preventive treatment. This is especially alarming for women and infants, as Medicaid currently supports 41% of births in Indiana—a critical safety net for maternal and child health.
Healthcare is not just a privilege—it is a foundation for economic security, family stability, and thriving communities. When people have access to preventive care, they are healthier, more financially stable, and better able to contribute to their families and workplaces. Policies like SB2 will have long-term consequences, leading to poorer health outcomes, lost productivity, and increased burdens on hospitals and social services.
We urge Indiana lawmakers to prioritize policies that protect vulnerable families and ensure that every Hoosier—has access to the care they need to survive and thrive. A stronger Indiana starts with ensuring that Hoosiers continue to have the healthcare they need to work, care for their children, and contribute to their communities.
We encourage everyone to learn more and speak out—contact your legislators today and tell them to protect healthcare for all Hoosiers.
