MUNCIE, IN — Fire Up DWNTWN 2024 is adding an exciting new vocal competition to its lineup of events: DWNTWN IDOL. Competitors can sing in one of three event categories on the Ball State University Stage, on the corner of Walnut and Main, during Fire Up DWNTWN on Saturday, September 21 from 6-8 pm. The categories include group performance, soloist 18 and under, and soloist 18 and up. Winners from each event group will be chosen by a panel of judges. One of the three category winners will then be crowned DWNTWN IDOL by audience votes. The DWNTWN IDOL will receive a $500 cash prize from the panel of judges and a trophy.

“We’re shaking things up at Fire Up this year with a brand-new competition!” said Cheryl Crowder, Muncie Downtown Development Partnership’s Director of Events. “We are looking forward to contestants bringing their A game to this competition and making it difficult for the judges and audience to choose a winner!”

Competitors can choose from over 60,000  songs on KaraFun in karaoke style before the deadline on September 9 and walkups will be welcomed as time allows; however, no monitors for lyrics will be provided. Singers are allowed to bring personal phones or iPads if lyric assistance is required. Contestants can also choose to accompany themselves during their performance on an acoustic guitar or electric piano. Four mics will be available for the group performance category.

Contestants will receive performance times during the week of September 16 via email. If spots are not filled per category or there is a no-show, walk-ups will be allowed as time allows.

To compete for this year’s DWNTWN IDOL, sign up through the Fire Up DWNTWN website (downtownmuncie.org/fireup). For any questions, email Cheryl Crowder at cheryl@downtownmuncie.org.
