INDIANAPOLISIn a recent release, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education announced that 300 student scholarships have been awarded through the 2024-2025 Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship. Each year, this scholarship is given to high-achieving high school and college students pursuing a career in education. The scholarship can be renewed for up to $10,000 annually for four academic years under the agreement that these students will teach for five years at an eligible Indiana school.

For a student to qualify for the scholarship, they must meet at least one of the following academic requirements:

  • Graduate in the top 20% of their high school class;
  • Earn a score in the 20th percentile on the SAT or ACT; or
  • Have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA

Once selected, students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative college GPA and complete at least 30 college credits per year.

According to the release, 945 students applied for the 2024-2025 Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, marking a 58% increase from the previous year. Applicants represented 315 Indiana high schools in 89 counties across the state. Most applicants were Indiana high school seniors, making up 71% of the total applicants.

Among the group of prestigious students selected to receive this scholarship, five are residents of Delaware County. Of the total recipients, 68 have chosen to continue their academic pursuits at Ball State University.

In 2023, State Rep. Sue Errington (D-Muncie) voted for legislation increasing the scholarship amount.

“I would like to congratulate all five Delaware County students selected for this prestigious scholarship and extend a warm welcome to those who have chosen to study at Ball State University,” Errington said. “The exceptional work of these students is something to be applauded, and they will undoubtedly be a tremendous asset to our educational workforce and Delaware County. I am excited to watch these students in their academic pursuits and blossom into accomplished educators.

“The Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship recognizes the crucial role our educators play in shaping Indiana’s future. Teachers are the backbone of our society, ensuring that youth are given the tools they need to succeed and develop into well-educated, hard-working individuals. I am extremely proud of these young educators, and I know they will go on to do incredible service for Hoosier children and make the state of Indiana proud.”
