MUNCIE, Ind. – The City of Muncie is holding a small opening ceremony for the splash pad at Cooley Park on Friday, August 13. The park is located at 3120 S. Mock Ave.
Cooley’s renovations, which are a part of the City of Muncie administration’s 4-year park plan, include a new splash pad, the construction of a new walking trail, new lighting across the park, renovations to the restroom facilities, and planting 22 new trees.
Mayor Dan Ridenour will give a few remarks along with other administration officials at 4 p.m., and then the city will turn on the park’s splash pad.
Some of Cooley Park’s planned renovations are still under construction, including work on the park’s basketball courts, parking lot, additional landscaping, an additional playground, and water fountains on the structure at the park. These will all be completed after the official opening of the splash pad.
Mayor Ridenour decided to move ahead with opening the splash pad as soon as possible so that those in the community would be able to use the facility before the end of the season.
The work at Cooley Park is just one part of a larger plan for mayor Ridenour’s administration.
The goal is to work on the major revitalization of four major parks, one in each corner of the city over the next few years. The city has planned revitalization efforts for Cooley Park, Halteman Park, Riverview Park and Thomas Park.
The city is also working on an additional two parks per year across the city with minor updates including playground equipment. This is in part because of a 16% increase in the 2021 city parks budget from what it had been in previous years. This year works is being done at Morningside and McCulloch parks.
