MUNCIE, IN–Minnetrista Museum and Gardens is proud to present Clearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass, a groundbreaking exhibition that explores how contemporary Native American and Indigenous Pacific-Rim artists have transformed glass art. This fascinating exhibition will run from February 8, 2025, through May 18, 2025, in Gallery 3 of the Center Building.
“Defining Indigenous art can be challenging. Oftentimes it is thought of as traditional, but art evolves,” says Sebastián Encina, Associate Director of Curation & Exhibition at Minnetrista. “Clearly Indigenous reminds us that Indigenous artists are still here producing brilliant works of art using contemporary methods that incorporate established motifs, patterns, and stories. These talented artists explore familiar themes and new expressions in glass art that is sure to captivate everyone who visits this world class exhibition.”
Through over 100 stunning glass objects, this exhibition breaks boundaries by blending ancestral Native cultural narratives with innovative glass techniques. Clearly Indigenous delves into how Native artists have embraced new materials and methods, reimagining traditional designs while also providing historical insight into how glass art first found its place in Indian Country.
Highlighted in the exhibition are the works of renowned artists including Dale Chihuly, Raya Friday (Lummi), Dan Friday (Lummi), Preston Singletary (Tlingit), Tammy Garcia (Santa Clara Pueblo), Joe Feddersen (Colville), and so many other talented artists. Their groundbreaking works in glass art bring a unique perspective on Native traditions, offering fresh insights and contemporary expressions.
Additionally, local artists Maria Walker and Melissa Clifford will be featured in the atrium cases, showcasing their own vibrant contributions—including beadwork, jewelry, and more—while offering a local connection to the global conversation around Indigenous art.
Visitors will be captivated by the fusion of modern glass artistry with Native symbolism, offering a fresh perspective on the past and present of Indigenous art. The exhibition provides a two-pronged exploration: one examining the evolving ways in which Native artists continue to reinterpret cultural traditions, and the other focusing on the historical journey of glass art into Native communities.
This exhibition is included with general admission and promises to leave a lasting impact on all who experience it. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to witness the innovative and contemporary perspectives of Native artists as they reimagine Indigenous traditions through the powerful medium of modern glass art.
Join Katrina Mitten, Monica Raphael, and Maria Walker for an evening of discussion at Tapas & Talk: Looking Closely–An Indigenous Artist Panel, where they will explore the preservation and transmission of Indigenous artistic traditions, sharing insights into their creative processes and how their work intertwines personal expression with ancestral voices.
The event, featuring a curated selection of tapas and a complimentary drink (with additional beverages available at the cash bar), will take place on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Center Building, Indiana Room at Minnetrista Museum & Gardens.
