STATEHOUSE  – Indiana recently honored local farms owned and operated by the same family for at least 100 years with Hoosier Homestead awards, according to State Reps. J.D. Prescott (R-Union City) and Elizabeth Rowray (R-Yorktown), and State Sen. Scott Alexander (R-Muncie).

“I admire the farming families who have fueled Indiana’s agricultural industry over the years,” Rowray said. “This award recognizes the dedication, hard work and generations of commitment these families have invested in maintaining their farms and preserving our state’s heritage. Their efforts are part of what makes Indiana truly special.”

Farms owned and operated by the same family for 100, 150 and 200 years can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.

“As someone who grew up in a farming family, I deeply understand the dedication and perseverance it takes to maintain an operation,” Prescott said. “This award is a testament to the long-lasting legacy and hard work of Indiana’s farm families. Congratulations to all the recipients for this achievement and contributions to our agricultural heritage.”

The following farms received Hoosier Homestead awards:

  • The Abshire Farm, in operation since 1864, received centennial and sesquicentennial awards;
  • The C Clifford Green Farm, in operation since 1874, received a sesquicentennial award; and
  • The Kirklin Farm, in operation since 1874, received centennial and sesquicentennial awards.

“I know firsthand how much time and dedication it takes to keep a family farm running for over a century,” Alexander said. “It is important we recognize our long-standing farmers for their hard work and continued service to our state, and I congratulate these farms on their success.”

The local farm families were among 104 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their dedication to the state’s agriculture industry.

Hoosier Homestead ceremonies are conducted every spring and summer. The state has honored more than 6,000 farms since the award was established in 1976.
