MUNCIE, IN—Join Minnetrista Museum & Gardens for a day filled with nature, excitement, and adventure at the annual Muncie Arbor Day Celebration on April 27th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year holds special significance as we commemorate Muncie’s 26th year as a recognized Tree City USA community. To mark this occasion, join us for a day of fun-filled activities, educational demonstrations, and environmental advocacy. At 10 a.m., Mayor Dan Ridenour will read the official Arbor Day proclamation.
At the heart of the Muncie Arbor Day Celebration lies the sapling giveaway, a unique opportunity for attendees to take home a piece of nature and contribute to the city’s urban forest. Choose from a selection of canopy trees, which make up the upper layer of the urban forest, typically reaching heights ranging from 40 to 90 feet, including White Oak, Overcup Oak, Red Oak, Shumard Oak, Bald Cypress, River Birch, and Sycamore. The understory trees vary from 8 to 20 feet and are generally more shade tolerant, including Redbud and Washington Hawthorn. Each sapling represents a chance to nurture and grow a green legacy for generations.
But the Muncie Arbor Day celebration is more than just a giveaway—it’s an immersive learning experience. Engage in informative tree and sapling planting demonstrations led by experts, gaining practical insights into effective tree care and maintenance. Discover the artistry of nature at family-friendly craft stations designed to spark creativity and promote environmental awareness. Explore Indiana Woods on Wheels, a traveling interactive exhibition designed to showcase and educate about Indiana’s most abundant and renewable resource: our forests. Inside the mobile exhibition, you’ll find a forestry expert ready to answer questions, offer in-depth information, and provide science-based forestry lessons to all. And keep your eyes peeled for our special guest, Johnny Appleseed, who will make special appearances throughout the event.
“We aim to foster a deeper connection between the community and our urban forest,” said James Edwards, Associate Director of Horticulture at Minnetrista. “By providing hands-on learning opportunities and access to quality saplings, we hope to empower individuals to become active stewards of our environment and champions for sustainability.” Muncie Arbor Day Celebration community partners include Muncie Delaware Clean and Beautiful, Red-Tail Land Conservancy, Delaware County Master Gardeners, City of Muncie, Muncie Urban Forestry Program, Muncie Urban Forestry Committee, Muncie Mayor Dan Ridenour, Muncie Parks and Recreation, Muncie Sanitary District, Indiana DNR Community and Urban Forestry, Community Enhancement Projects, Davey Resource Group, and Woods on Wheels Exhibit. This event is supported by Community Enhancement Projects, Zeigler Foundation, the City of Muncie, The Townsend Company, Jay Crew, Rundell Ernstberger Associates, Brumond-Smith Nursery, Blue Grass Farms, and FlatLand Resources.
In addition to the giveaways and demonstrations, attendees can participate in a free raffle, with prizes ranging from trees and gardening tools to other exciting giveaways. Whether you’re seeking guidance on planting your sapling, selecting the perfect tree for your space, or simply looking for a fun-filled day with the family, the Muncie Arbor Day Celebration promises something for everyone. Supplies are limited, so make sure to come early to secure your tree and enjoy all the festivities.
