MUNCIE, IN—The Greater Muncie Chamber of Commerce hosted the 2024 National Civics Bee® in Delaware County on April 9, 2024. The National Civics Bee® is an initiative aimed at encouraging young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities.
Hunter R., Noah C., and Braxton J. were named the top three finalists of Delaware County’s Civics Bee competition, organized in partnership with The Civic Trust® of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.
“We are very proud of the students who competed in the National Civics Bee® in our community. Their dedication to understanding the foundations of our democracy is inspiring. Through their participation, they exemplify the importance of civic engagement and the power of knowledge in shaping our collective future. The future of civics in our community is bright!,” said Elizabeth Rowray, President/CEO of the Greater Muncie Chamber of Commerce.
14 students participated in the local competition after their essays were chosen from among 56 entries. Students participated in a live quiz event and answered questions from judges to test their civic knowledge. Hunter R. from Delta Middle School took first place, followed by Noah C. from Daleville Middle School, and Braxton J. from Southside Middle School for second and third places. The judges for this year’s competition were: Kelsey Harrington with the George and Frances Ball Foundation, Garrett Doan with First Merchants Bank, and Brenda Brumfield with the Greater Muncie Chamber of Commerce. The event was emceed by Dale Basham.
The top three finalists impressed the judges with their passion, knowledge, and presentation.
The first, second, and third place winners received $500, $250, and $125 cash prizes and will advance to the Indiana Civics Bee Competition on August 23 at the Statehouse in Indianapolis – hosted by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and Indiana Department of Education. The state winners will receive various prizes, including $1,000 cash for the first- place student.
