Muncie, IN– Wednesday afternoon, the Honorable Thomas A. Cannon Jr., Judge of the Delaware Circuit Court No. 5 administered the Oath of Office to Eric Hoffman who will begin his second term as Delaware County’s Prosecuting Attorney on January 1, 2023. Judge Cannon’s father, Thomas A. Cannon Sr., served as Delaware County Prosecutor 1941-1942 before he enlisted in the U.S. Army to serve our country in World War II.
Hoffman is a graduate of Ball State University and Indiana University McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis. Eric joined the Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office in 2001 as a law clerk. In 2003, he was hired as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney. In 2012, Eric was appointed Chief Trial Deputy and in 2018 Eric was elected Prosecuting Attorney of Delaware County.
He currently prosecutes homicide cases and other selected crimes of violence including any shaken baby syndrome/abusive head trauma cases that are filed in Delaware County. He also defends all of Delaware County’s convictions in post-conviction relief actions. Eric is responsible for training and supervising the staff of deputy prosecutors. Hoffman currently serves as the Co-Chair of the Regional Child Fatality Review Team, and President of the Ball State University Advisory Board for the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology.
In the past, Eric has served on the advisory boards for the Delaware County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program, Delaware County Mental Health Association, and the Ball Memorial Hospice Program. Eric frequently speaks on topics involving child abuse and neglect, child fatality, homicide, the insanity defense, and victims’ rights.
