MUNCIE, IN – At Ivy Tech Muncie-Henry County, the Supply Chain and Logistics Program is designed to give students the knowledge, skills, and certifications to work in the nation’s supply chain. From logistics to management to driving the semis needed to keep the supply chain flowing, the program offers everything a student needs to move into the workforce or continue their education at a 4-year university.
Muncie and Delaware County continues to expand in the logistics world. According to the Muncie-Delaware County, Indiana Economic Development Alliance page, Muncie and Delaware County provides a competitive edge for logistics companies. The city and county is a central location within a day’s drive of 80% of the United States’ population, is serviced by two active railroad companies, provides access to three international airports, and has two fully-serviced industrial parks.
Ivy Tech is on the forefront of providing a valuable, affordable education for those planning on entering the supply chain and logistics workforce. In addition to learning the high tech and information systems used to track goods and increase efficiencies, students have the ability to add a CDL to their portfolio as well. The CDL+ program is an 18-credit-hour certificate program that can be completed in one semester. Students receive 160 hours of training in preparation of becoming a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holder. This program includes 121 hours of operating observation, 30 hours of behind-the-wheel skill development, an 8-week internship, an overview of logistics and transportation including all types of trucking operations and intermodal processes. This program is also covered under federal student loans, if the student qualifies for the federal student loan program.
Indiana has 9,310 annual job openings in supply chain management with a starting median salary of $22.32 per hour. Students who graduate from the Supply Chain and Logistics program can join the workforce in purchasing and procurement, quality and supplier quality, engineering, logistics, transportation and distribution, and supply chain management information technology.
“According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 37% of all jobs are part of supply chain management. A growing number of executive positions are filled by SCM professionals. SCM professionals interact within and outside of the company and experience more of their organization’s operations than in most careers. Travel, including international, is possible with many SCM careers. These professionals tend to have great movement opportunities in their organizations but can also locate a new position with a new company easier than other professions. Ivy Tech’s Supply Chain and Logistics program ensures that graduates are prepared for these exciting and innovative positions by graduation,” Alan Short, Assistant Program Chair of Supply Chain and Logistics for Ivy Tech Muncie-Henry County, said.
