EWA Science Bowl team achieves Top 10 finish

MUNCIE, Ind.– The hours and hours of practice paid off for a group of East Washington Academy (EWA) students – they are Indiana’s 2022 M.A.T.H. Bowl champions! Thirteen EWA 4th and 5th graders beat out 114 other schools from around the state to claim the title.
“I am really impressed by their passion for mathematics and am proud of their hard work,” EWA 5th grade teacher and M.A.T.H. Bowl Coach Beth Buehler said. “This is the first year we were able to compete in person since the start of COVID, so it was exhilarating to hear our name announced each round as the leaders of the competition.”
The competition, recently held in Yorktown, consists of four rounds of eight multiple-choice questions varying in difficulty. The competition is based on Indiana’s Academic Standards for Mathematics and includes curriculum developed by The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
EWA outscored runner-up Aboite Elementary of Ft. Wayne 29 to 25. Two other schools scored 24 points and two others had 23. EWA competed in the Red Class, which includes all schools with up to 162 students combined in 4th and 5th grades. Overall, the Wildcats finished ninth in all classes.

Science Bowl Team in Top 10
Prior to the M.A.T.H. Bowl, EWA’s Science Bowl team also had an impressive performance in the 4th grade competition (Yellow Class), finishing ninth. St. Richard’s School of Indianapolis took top honors.
“This group of students worked exceptionally hard during the practice sessions,” EWA Science Bowl Coach Heather Veatch said. “Their efforts and devotion definitely paid off.”
This competition requires students to conduct experiments that simulated the rock cycle. Teams had 30 minutes to complete the experiments in each of the three rounds of online tests. The EWA Science Bowl team included:
