STATEWIDE–No severe weather is expected in the immediate future, but the National Weather Service says now is the time to have a plan in place for your family and business.
This week is Severe Weather Preparedness Week.
“Once we get into this time of year, the chances for severe storms go up. The chances for tornadoes go up. Indiana has had a long history of tornadoes in March and especially April,” said Randy Bowers, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.
Bowers says the key is being prepared. He recommends you and your family sit down and make an emergency plan for what to do in case severe weather breaks out. It also helps to know where the closest shelter is located.
“That way, when we do get into a situation where we have tornado watches and warnings, then you have already practiced it and you know what to do at that point. That way you can take immediate action,” said Bowers.
It is not just tornadoes that can produce strong winds in Indiana. Other severe storms have been known to knock down trees, cause power outages, and damage houses.
“In case the winds are strong enough to break windows, you’ll want to go inside and stay away from those windows. Go to the lowest floor that you have in your home or business. Find an interior room that is away from windows. You can use pillows and blankets to protect yourself from flying debris, even if you’re in a sheltered environment like that,” said Bowers.
Bowers urges you to also stay away from floodwaters and remain inside if you see lightning that is lasting a while.
Most places in Indiana are expected to get rain on Friday, but rainfall totals are unknown at this point.
