Muncie, IN In 2017, Hayley Keihn graduated from Ivy Tech Community College Muncie-Henry County with her associate degree in Medical Assisting. Keihn’s life had never been easy, but her decision to pursue her degree in medical assisting was. She took a chance to make a change in her life and this allowed her to live more comfortably and become more secure, financially.

“I spent six years in getting my associates degree because I was allowed to go at my speed. I also worked full time and could not commit to school full time. The team of advisors to instructors to bursar’s office to even the bookstore employees are there to truly help you,” Keihn said.

“Ivy Tech Community College is dedicated to ensuring students succeed in their higher education goals, no matter how long it may take,” said Vice Chancellor of Student Success, Dr. Amy Ward. “Our students come in with academic goals and our team supports them as they achieve those goals.”

Keihn currently works as a medical assistant with Meridian Health Primary Care in Muncie, IN. She started with the clinic as an intern for her required Ivy Tech internship program. The internship ended with a job offer as a full-time medical assistant. Without her degree, this would not have been possible.

When making the decision of where to go, Keihn considered her options. She wanted smaller class sizes where she could get assistance when she needed it.

Keihn said, “I chose Muncie Ivy Tech because I live in Muncie and I didn’t want to go to a big university.”

Like a lot of college students, Keihn had to work while she was attending school.

“I also was lucky to be employed there in the facilities department while I was a student,” Keihn said. Ivy Tech Community College works with the federal work study program but also has a record of hiring their own students as well.

“Ivy Tech’s dedication to their students is deeper than just the cost of tuition,” Dr. Ward said.

“The medical assistant program at Ivy Tech Muncie-Henry County provides students with a versatile skill set,” Brittany Davis, Program Chair for Medical Assisting Program, said, “Medical assistants provide patient care in outpatient care facilities, such as doctor’s offices, by taking vitals, performing tests, and assisting the physician as needed. Because we are also trained in administrative duties, we can work front and back office positions making this a versatile career choice with a high demand and many job opportunities in our area.”
