Muncie, IN—Ivy Tech Community College is looking to help single moms get the tools they need, by offering a free eight-week virtual course. The course will be offered on four campuses — Lafayette, Indianapolis, Muncie and Sellersburg — as a pilot, but will expand statewide soon.
Classes begin March 22, will be offered virtually, and participants will earn college credit.
“In the class, students will learn note-taking techniques, how to get aligned with the workforce, knowing their strengths and career options, financial literacy, and networking,” said Dr. Mia D Johnson, Statewide Lead for I.PASS and Chancellor, Ivy Tech Anderson campus. I. PASS- Ivy Parents Achieve Success with Support is Ivy Tech’s pilot program designed to help single parent learners be successful. This course is the first phase of the program which hopes to expand for the fall of 2021 semester. “We want to help moms succeed. We are passionate about equipping single parents with the tools necessary to move beyond this one course and feel confident to earn their degree.”
Ivy Tech will help remove barriers such as providing options for childcare, financial aid for future courses and career coaching. The college’s objective is simple, to increase college attainment for single moms.
“Education is the catalyst that helps change lives. Single parents should not have to choose between taking care of their children and earning their degree. They can do both” said Johnson.
