Muncie, IN – A compilation of ballet works, modern dance, and movement in response to music will take place in the University Theatre at 7:30 p.m. December 6 as “Masters and Visionaries”debuts.
Directed by Associate Professor of Dance Audra Sokol, “Masters and Visionaries” will allow audiences to witness 23 performers blend dance and music through choreography by historical figures and current dance visionaries.
“Audience members will witness the ever-changing art of dance through four works by choreographic masters and visionaries of dance,” Sokol said. “This concert is based purely on physical movement, responding to and with the music.”
From ballet works such as Marius Petipa’s choreography of “Le Corsaire” (restaged by faculty member Lisa Carter) to a classic modern dance work by a leading pioneer of modern dance, Martha Graham, the performance will offer a variety of styles and sounds. Two newly devised pieces by current choreographers, Sidra Bell and Jamy Meek, provide contrast and another aspect to the diverse and versatile show.
“There is also a large number of students from the theatre and dance area who live behind the scenes,” Sokol said. “They work on production elements that would otherwise make this show virtually impossible.”
Additional performances will be December 7 at 2:30 p.m. and 7: 30 p.m. and December 8 at 2:30 p.m. Admission is $18 for the general public and $15 for faculty, staff, students, and seniors.
