Muncie, IN—On Saturday evening, Heartland Hall at the Delaware County Fairgrounds was transformed into an enchanting scene from various Disney movies. Guests of this magical experience were individuals with special needs from Delaware and surrounding counties, as they celebrated Prom 2019.
Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy greeted nearly six hundred attendees, their aides and family members as they joined together to “Be Our Guest…A Night With Mickey and Friends”. The building was transformed into a variety of scenes from Disney movies, including Toontown, a forest, an under-the-sea area complete with waterfall, and a magical castle with well known princesses. Entertainment included a demonstration of ballroom dancing, face paintings, character artists temporary tattoos, and an opportunity to mingle with favorite Disney characters. Funding for the event was again made possible through the generosity and support of the Muncie and area communities. It was indeed a very special evening.
In hopes of continuing this much anticipated event, co-chairmen Lynne Hatfield and Mindy Kemper have worked during this past year to register the “Delaware County Special Needs Prom, Inc.” as a non-profit organization in order to more easily secure funding and with the hope of expanding a variety of social events for those of this unique and special community. As mothers of individuals with special differences it is their dream that their own children, as well as the many others in and around the community, will have social events available to them just as there are for their non-disabled peers.
