Muncie, IN—When Muncie native Cheryl Lindus returned to the city after living away for 10 years for work, she kept hearing local residents talk about having to leave Muncie for good food, entertainment and shopping. She realized many residents weren’t aware of all Muncie has to offer and decided to do something about it. Last May she launched Experience Muncie, which is a social media project designed to keep local residents informed about what’s going on in the community.
Lindus works diligently to post on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram about what is happening in Muncie. She curates information from about 30 different sources and puts them in an easy-to-use list format.
But keeping up on what’s happening in the community goes beyond events. Lindus also focuses on sharing positive news on Experience Muncie. In October she began a series on Muncie’s Influential Women and will continue that through 2019 by profiling one woman a week.
“Experience Muncie is really about uplifting our outlook on our community and providing a positive resource for people to use when they’re looking for things to do and they want to know about what’s going on with some of our local businesses,” Lindus said.
Right now Experience Muncie is solely on social media. Lindus said eventually it may have its own website as well, but for now social media is the perfect platform for it. As a newspaper veteran, Lindus writes all the copy and takes photos for Experience Muncie. She is also working tirelessly to make connections throughout the community she is happy to call home.
“I find that Muncie’s people are committed,” she said. “They are committed to community; they are committed to each other.”
