Muncie, IN—After a day full of rain and more rain, the clouds disappeared and the sun shined brightly shortly before the Delaware Community Special Needs Prom got underway.
“A Night Under the Big Top” was the theme of this year’s Special Needs Prom. Students and individuals from Delaware County gathered on May 19, 2018 at The Loft on Isanogel, which was donated to host this year’s wonderful event.
Upon arrival prom attendees immediately felt like they had just stepped into a scene from the circus. The event, coordinated by Ms. Lynne Hatfield, was funded completely through donations and was free for all who attended. This year the local community came together to make the prom a truly special event.
Hundreds of prom dresses were donated which allowed the ladies to attend a special Dress Party and pick out a beautiful dress for free. The men weren’t forgotten as Ford’s Tux offered a free tuxedo rental. Prom goers were entertained by a giraffe stilt walker, a large inflatable elephant, a balloon artist, face painters, caricature artist, a magician and a choreographed dance routine highlighting a song from The Greatest Showman, the underlying theme of the event. The message from the movie is “No one ever made a difference being like everyone else. The Noblest art is making others happy.”
Special thanks go out to services and donations from The Loft on Isanogel, Once Upon a Plate Catering, Simply Beautiful Salon, Dalton & Co., Ford’s Tux, H & D Superent & Special Occasions, The Fickle Peach, Bittersweet Custom Cakes & Confections, Wassons Nursery, A Taste of Magic Catering, Ryan Hernley (DJ), Rea Zachary (Balloons), First Merchants Bank, NASH FM Radio, Together We Can, A1 For Fun, Ball State Federal Credit Union, Seth Cook, Al and Judy Robinson, Susan Volvrecht and the Muncie Journal, who live-streamed a portion of the prom to Facebook.
Thanks to all who gave monetary donations in addition to all of the volunteers who helped make the prom a such a special evening. Without the donations and many volunteer hours of the Muncie community, this event would not have been possible.
