Muncie, IN—We are hopeful that the entire community will be able to recover quickly from the severe storms that damaged the Muncie area last night. Many MCS families have been impacted by those storms.
Regarding the concern many have for the damage sustained by the MCS Fieldhouse, currently MCS is working with our structural engineering firm and other appropriate specialists to determine the extent of the damage and what steps will need to be taken before the Fieldhouse can reopen. A special thanks to the MCS Maintenance Staff and our partner SSC for their incredible work in cleaning up the debris from the storm at all of our campuses.
For the foreseeable future, MCHS athletic contests that were originally scheduled in the Fieldhouse will be played at Southside Middle School or another appropriate venue. The athletic staff will need a couple of days to reorganize schedules, practice sessions, etc. Information will be shared on the MCS athletic website as it is available. Luckily, the Muncie Central Memorabilia Room and all of the rich historical contents seem to have escaped damage.
Regarding the traditional Muncie Community Christmas Sing, we do not have another appropriate MCS venue that can handle the size of the crowds. At this time, we feel it is best to cancel the Christmas Sing for this year. In order to keep the spirit of the Christmas Sing tradition alive, we will be working with our music staff to consider ways we will incorporate our students and the community in the holiday spirit despite not being able to hold the Sing this year. For instance, MCS will be represented by the West View Choir at the Light Up the City of Muncie and Muncie Civic Theater Grand Re-opening on December 7 at Canon Commons. We look forward to being able to gather again in the Fieldhouse to cheer the Bearcats to victory and celebrate the holiday season with the Muncie Community in the future.
Due to the unsafe condition of the Fieldhouse’s structure, it is not possible for MCS to allow non-essential personnel access via direction from the State Fire Marshal’s office.
The Muncie Community Schools (MCS) serve approximately 5238 students from Muncie and the surrounding area. MCS provides a range of diverse opportunities for children as well as adult basic education.
