Muncie, IN— The 14th Annual Arts Alive! Concert Series will continue at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 2nd in Ball State University’s Sursa Performance Hall with the St. Lawrence String Quartet for the first Sherman M. Zeigler Memorial Concert.
Called “witty, buoyant, and wickedly attentive (The Gazette, Montreal), with a “peerless” sense of ensemble (Financial Times, London), the quartet is celebrated for its “smoldering intensity” (Washington Post), and “flexibility, dramatic fire and… hint of rock ‘n’ roll energy” (LA Times).
The St. Lawrence String Quartet is renowned for the intensity of its performances, its breadth of repertoire and its commitment to concert experiences that are at once intellectually exciting and emotionally alive. Established in 1989, the quartet St. Lawrence String Quartet earned international recognition within a few years, winning both the Banff Quartet Competition and the Young Concert Artists audition in 1992. The group has since developed an undisputed reputation as a truly world class chamber ensemble.
Sherman M. Zeigler, who passed away in 1988, was born and raised in Muncie and became a successful and respected businessman in the area, serving for many years as a member of both Rotary and the Exchange Club of Muncie. He also was a founding board member of the Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County. Sherman was passionate about classical music, being particularly fond of violin and string quartet performances. Sherman served on the board of the Muncie Symphony from 1974-1980. He headed up the Symphony’s finance committee in 1976 and served as board President from 1978-1980, during which time he helped the Symphony establish its first endowment fund.
