Muncie, IN—Join local historians and actors for the 4th annual guided walking tour of a portion of Delaware County’s largest landmark and learn about many interesting historical figures. The beautiful fall foliage lends itself to provide the perfect backdrop for the information packed tours that are family friendly and will feature prominent members from our community as well as lesser known names. Previous tours have introduced guests to “Diamond” Harriett Mitchell Anthony-a local socialite who wore diamond studded heels, Benjamin V. Cohen- one of FDR’s most trusted advisors, John Bloss- a Civil War veteran and Ida Husted Harper- Susan B. Anthony’s friend, advisor and biographer.
Historic artifacts will be displayed in the Gothic chapel and complimentary refreshments will be available by the fountain. Tours are on the half hour and limited to groups of 20 or less. Walking on uneven ground and steps is required on the tour.
Tickets are $10 in advance at the Beech Grove cemetery office-1400 W. Kilgore Avenue, online at Eventbrite or can be purchased at the gate that evening. Children under 10 are free if accompanied by an adult. Parking is directly across Kilgore from the main gate.
The tours are hosted by the Old West End Neighborhood Association and Beech Grove Cemetery. Proceeds benefit the cemetery and neighborhood initiatives.
Beech Grove Cemetery Comes to Life books will be available for purchase in the chapel. The books are $30 each, cash and checks accepted.
The book explores the history of Beech Grove Cemetery in Muncie, the evolution of lawn park cemeteries, a study of the landscape design, explanations of the funerary motifs and architecture, and comprises hundreds of short biographies of some of the 45,000 individuals laid to rest within the cemetery’s gates.
