MUNCIE, IN – The City of Muncie has officially completed the annexation of a 12-acre parcel of land donated by Ball State University on February 28, 2023. This strategic move marks the beginning of a collaborative effort between the university and the city to create a new subdivision, aimed at enhancing housing options in the region. The new development will draw inspiration from the successful Storer Estates subdivision, a 34-lot residential project on the former Storer Elementary site.
The Storer Estates community, featuring walking trails and the newly developed Storer Woods park, has proven to be a success, with all lots purchased by national home builder D.R. Horton. Six new homes are currently under construction. The collaboration between the City of Muncie and Ball State University is focused on replicating this success and expanding housing opportunities for the city’s growing population.
“This annexation is a critical step toward meeting the housing needs of our community,” said Muncie Mayor Dan Ridenour. “Ball State University and the City of Muncie have the same goal with this acreage: to create new housing options for families, students, and professionals. Thank you to the City Council for approving our annexation request. Now we can move forward with developers and builders to create a thriving, vibrant community.”
This annexation marks the third voluntary annexation in Muncie in the past four months. In October 2024, five acres at the intersection of Morrison and Bethel were annexed for a planned commercial development. Additionally, Westminster Village, which requested voluntary annexation in mid-2024, has also received approval for its annexation.
With these recent annexations, Muncie is well on its way to expanding housing and commercial options, creating new opportunities for residents and businesses alike.
