MUNCIE, Indiana – The Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities and Burris Laboratory School have reaffirmed their positions as leading high schools in Indiana, according to the latest rankings released by U.S. News & World Report.
In the “2024 Best U.S. High Schools” listing, the Indiana Academy secured the No. 2 spot in the state, while Burris Laboratory School climbed two spots to No. 12, continuing their tradition of excellence. Both institutions are operated by Ball State University’s Teachers College.
“This recognition underscores the unwavering dedication of our students, faculty, and staff in upholding academic excellence,” said Dr. Anand R. Marri, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Ball State. “Through the Indiana Academy and Burris Laboratory School, we remain committed to fostering exceptional learning environments that empower students and educators alike.”
The rankings are based on a comprehensive evaluation of student outcomes, including state assessments, college-level exam performance, and graduation rates. Notably, the Indiana Academy’s strong performance in state assessments and impressive 97-percent graduation rate contributed significantly to its high ranking.

Burris, which ranked 14th in the state in last year’s U.S. News & World Report “Best U.S. High Schools” listing, improved two spots in this year’s rankings in part due to its No. 9 state ranking in the College Ready Index, and a 78-percent student participation rate in at least one Advanced Placement (AP) exam. Participation and assessment scores in AP classes and exams are the most weighted elements considered for the rankings.

Nationally, the Indiana Academy ranked 173rd overall, placing within the top 1 percent of high schools evaluated, while Burris Laboratory School ranked 870th in the country, ranking within the top 5 percent nationwide out of over 17,000 schools assessed across all states and the District of Columbia.
