MUNCIE, IN—Muncie Central’s basketball history will be on display during the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis Feb. 16-18.
The school’s historic eight state basketball championships will be featured as one of 24 6-foot basketball sculptures that will be placed at various locations downtown Indianapolis. The Bearcat basketball sculpture will be at West and Washington streets next to Indiana government buildings.
The art project is called “Hoosier Hysteria.” The Muncie Central sculpture is called “Muncie Central’s Unmatched Record of Success.” The artist for the Bearcat sculpture is Mitchell Schuring, a graphic designer and mural artist from Lafayette.
Muncie Central has won more state basketball championships prior to class basketball than any other high school in the nation. As a result, the school’s basketball history also is featured in The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.
After the event, the basketball sculpture will be donated to the Muncie Community Schools.
The public voted in 2023 to select the most memorable moments in Indiana basketball history from a list of 50 suggestions made by a committee of sports journalist, members of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, former coaches and players, former administrators and other experts.
