MUNCIE, Ind.—The Altrusa International Foundation has awarded the Altrusa Club of Muncie, IN, Inc. a $4000 grant for their Literacy Project: Today a Reader—Tomorrow a Leader. The overall goal of this project is to get books into the hands of 3,430 Muncie students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. The Muncie Altrusa club will collaborate with Classroom Connections of ECI and the eight elementary schools in Muncie to distribute books to all students.
Anne Condran, Muncie Altrusa member and chair of the literacy committee said, “This grant of $4,000 from the Altrusa International Foundation will allow the Muncie Altrusa Club to obtain thousands of books. The books will be distributed to all Pre-K through fifth grade students in the eight elementary schools in Muncie. This enables children to build their personal home library which encourages them to read. The members of Altrusa will be busy in the coming months working with Classroom Connections and school principals and teachers to get the books into the hands of students. It is a challenge we look forward to accepting.”
Muncie Altrusa Club is being challenged by Altrusa International over the next two years to contribute 500 books and 500 service hours by its members to literacy projects in the community.
The Altrusa Club of Muncie, IN, Inc is a part of Altrusa International, Inc whose purpose is to promote better communities through service by an international network of people with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
