Winners of Young Artist Exhibition Announced

Muncie, IN – The fifth annual Young Artist Exhibition took place on Thursday, May 6, at Cornerstone Center for the Arts. The winners and their families were invited to a private award ceremony in the Cornerstone auditorium where they received their prizes. The exhibition received over 200 submissions from students across Delaware County in kindergarten through twelfth grade.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all submissions and judging for the exhibition took place virtually. Six community artists and advocates judged the submissions and selected the top three pieces from six categories. Judges included: Erin Colleen Williams, Executive Director at the Muncie Arts and Culture Council, Sarah Shaffer, Program Coordinator at the Muncie Arts and Culture Council, Scott Anderson, Professor of Art at Ball State University, Dr. Michael Prater, Associate Professor of Art Education at Ball State University, Barbara Schafer, owner of Gordy Fine Art & Framing, and Barbara Giorgio-Booher, Teaching Professor of Art at Ball State University.

Winners of the kindergarten through second grade category included: first place, Xhayna G. (Longfellow Elementary School), second place, Daniel G. (Homeschool), and third place, Audrey B. (Westview Elementary School).

Winners of the third through fifth grade category included: first place, Zoey S. (Wes-Del Elementary School), second place, Adriana H. (East Washington Academy), and third place, Brooke D. (Wes-Del Elementary School).

Winners of the sixth through eighth grade 2D category included: first place, Lilly C., second place, Raegan J., and third place, Christy G., all from Yorktown Middle School.

Winners of the sixth through eighth grade 3D category included: first place, Alex G. (Homeschool), second place, Trinity C. (Delta Middle School), and third place, Amryn J. (Delta Middle School).

Winners of the ninth through twelfth grade 2D category included: first place, Chloe I. (Delta High School), second place, Alleigh S. (Wes-Del High School), and third place, Shelby M. (Muncie Central High School).

Winners of the ninth through twelfth grade 3D category included: first place, Camryn E., second place, Hailey C., and third place, Sara C., all from Delta High School.

Additionally, members of the Muncie Artist Guild Scholarship Committee awarded their Susie Burns Memorial Scholarship to Sam M. from Yorktown High school, with their piece “Fruit Menagerie.”

The school with the most award-winning pieces of the evening was Delta High School. Teachers Alicia Fuller and Helen Zacek were given a $500 prize to support the school’s art education program.

The winning pieces will remain on display in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery at Cornerstone until Friday, May 28. A virtual gallery will be available on the Cornerstone Center for the Arts website during this time. At the completion of the Cornerstone show, the winning pieces will be on display at PrimeTrust’s Bethel and Madison branches during the month of June.
