Muncie, IN—The City of Muncie has a rich history of Catholic education. St. Lawrence Catholic School was founded in 1881 and has educated thousands of Muncie community members in its 140-year history. St. Mary Catholic School was founded in 1949 and has been an integral part of the Muncie community. In August of 2020, the three Catholic churches of Muncie: St. Francis of Assisi, St. Lawrence, and St. Mary, united to form the Muncie Catholic pastorate to better serve the Muncie community. The three locations continue offering individual Masses and programming, but have joined together to promote the overall mission of the Catholic community in Muncie.

To support this mission, we are excited to announce the unification of the Catholic schools in Muncie. Effective June 1, 2021, the unified St. Michael Catholic School will open at 2301 West Gilbert Street, the location of the current St. Mary School/Pope John Paul II School.

According to Mr. Rob Frey, principal of the unified school, “I couldn’t be more excited. Together with the highly qualified teachers and staff, we plan to respect and build upon the rich history of each school as the foundation to strengthen, grow, and sustain high quality Catholic Education in Muncie.” St Michael Catholic school will serve students from Pre-K through 8th grade. Rev. Underwood “believes the decision to have a unified Catholic school enables it to provide the highest quality Catholic education for all children.”
