Muncie, IN—April is Child Abuse Awareness month, a time to recognize that we can each play a part in promoting the social and emotional wellbeing of children and families of our community.  After all, child abuse and neglect is 100% preventable. Every year volunteers and advocates plant pinwheel gardens in recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month.

At Prevent Child Abuse Council of Delaware County, we know that we can make a positive impact on the future by preventing abuse and neglect today.

Each year we welcome this visible demonstration of support for prevention as the perfect opportunity to remind citizens they can take an active role in support of children and families.

The Prevent Child Abuse Council of Delaware County over the past few years has chosen to celebrate this promotion of awareness through planting pinwheel gardens throughout our community by inviting individuals,  businesses, agencies and employers as well as schools and places of worship to join us in spreading the word.  The Pinwheel is the symbol for Prevent Child Abuse America.  They are a symbol of child abuse prevention and a visible reminder of the happy and healthy childhood that all children deserve.

The pinwheel gardens are our promise to the children of Delaware County that we are all working to make our community a safe and nurturing place for them and families to grow and flourish. Our pinwheel gardens are a great visible reminder to us all.

Children hold the future and its in the best interest as a community we make sure they are safe and well cared for.  They are our future and well worth the investment of your time and attention.  Everyone can do something, Here are a few suggestions as to how you can help create great childhoods happen and get involved in child abuse prevention. Three specific actions  – mentoring children and parents, advocating for family friendly policies in the workplace, and donating time and money – relate to child abuse while giving the public tools and resources they need.  Here are a few suggestions:

  • Volunteer to staff an after school program like a sports or academic team; tutoring a subject.
  • Mentoring a new parent by reaching our to your neighbor and offering to help by preparing a meal, or run an errand.
  • Donating time to organizations that support children, such as by offering to be a free tutor, or getting involved with a mentorship program.
