Muncie, IN – The Muncie Police Department is hosting its first fundraiser for the K-9 unit.  Dogtoberfest – a twist on the traditional Oktoberfest – will take place Oct. 21 at Canan Commons.

Dogtoberfest, an event for dogs and their human companions, will feature more than 30 vendors for dogs, activities and games, special dog treats, and pup merchandise for purchase. Dogs are encouraged to dress up for the costume contest. Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) will be onsite to provide $20 microchips for dogs with proceeds benefiting the MPD K-9 unit.  Informational training sessions will be led by Bonnie Krupa of Advance Canine Techniques. DJ Hurricane and Scaling Giants will provide live entertainment. The festival will also include food trucks and food vendors and beer from local breweries including The Guardian Brewing Company, Books and Brews, and New Corner Brewing Company.

Tickets are $25 for one owner and one dog.  Additional dogs may be added to owner tickets for $5 each. Vendor booths are available for $25.  Sponsorships are also available.

Police dogs serve an important role in maintaining safety in the community.  These highly trained dogs are used for locating drugs, searching for illegal firearms or explosives, seeking and subduing criminal suspects and leading searches for missing persons.

The Muncie Police Department currently has three police dogs and hopes to purchase three additional dogs. Each dog costs more than $10,000.
