On April 14, 2017, Sean and Heidi Hale, owners of the highly successful downtown business, Heidi J Hale Designs, will open their newest venture: Olive & Slate. The business will be located directly across the street from Heidi J Hale Designs at 304 S. Walnut, Muncie.
At Olive & Slate, you will find a wide variety of very unique home décor and gift items. If you’ve ever been inside Heidi J Hale Designs, you know their work is very stylish with an extra touch of quality, you may not have expected.
That extra touch of style and quality will also be found in the products you’ll find at Olive & Slate.
Sean and Heidi said the style of their products can be categorized as: Vintage Industrial, Retro, Rustic, and SteamPunk. (SteamPunk is defined as: “A style of design or fashion that combines historical elements with anachronistic technological features inspired by science fiction.)
Simply put, Olive & Slate will offer some very cool home furnishings, home décor items and gifts.
According to Heidi, “We are trying to bring fresh new artists and styles to the shop. Sean and I travelled across the country finding unique items and vendors to work with. We’ve looked all over to find unique items you might typically drive down to Indianapolis to find. When we open, we will be featuring gifts and home décor items from over 30 vendors we have personally hand-picked.”
For example, Olive & Slate will have lighting from Madagascar, agate lamps, and alabaster agate lamps. All hand made. They will offer geodes from all over the world available for purchase. The geodes will be offered in smaller sizes with pricing from $50 to $200. Olive & Slate will offer artist works from all over the country as well as local artists. Olive & Slate will also offer a line of popular candles that are currently sold at Nordstrom’s.
Below, you will find photographs of actual products Olive & Slate will offer.
“Our goal is to keep people here in Muncie without them having to travel to other places and using up their gasoline,” said Heidi. “We want to have a unique store that will make people want to come to Muncie, like they do for our other store across the street—Heidi Hale Designs. We’ve had people come to our jewelry store from Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky and all points across Indiana. We want Olive & Slate to be a destination shopping site. Because of our success with the Heidi J Hale Designs storefront, we realized that people wanted to come downtown to shop, they want to spend money, and they want MORE shops downtown. Dan Allen approached us about the building at 304 S. Walnut and asked us if we might be interested. So, that kind of solidified our idea about the home décor shop.”
One of the unique items Olive & Slate will offer are antique Sailbags, crafted from the actual sail of a ship. Woven into the inside of the bag, a printed tag describes interesting facts about the Sailbag: What type of sailboat the bag was made from, the region, and what the original boat’s name was.
It was important to Sean and Heidi to offer products for men, too. Men are just as important as women to them, so they worked hard to find unique items for men, like uniquely styled beer and wine accessories.
Heidi said, “For example, one of our geodes would be a great gift for Fathers Day or some other occasion. Those look great on a desk or bookshelf.”
Sean said, “We wanted to give back to Muncie, and we thought this kind of shopping experience is what Muncie needs. We think the shop will benefit everyone.”
“We want to inspire others to do what we are doing downtown.”
