The Delaware County Fair Board recently dedicated the former Future Farmers building to longtime educator and 4-H leader Dr. John Wright.

The board recently spent a Saturday to remodel the area into a picnic pavilion complete with tables for fair goers.

“John had a big influence on the youth in this area and it was the fair board’s way of thanking him for his lifetime of service to them and the 4-H community,” said fair board president Jane Lasater.

Wright recalled his first experience going to the fair with his father when he was eight years old and spent the night in the hog barn. That experience sparked his interest in 4-H, so he signed up for a corn project. “Years later, my wife encouraged me to go to Purdue and get a degree and become a 4-H leader,” John said.

John has been an educator in  Gaston, Daleville, Harrison Township, as well as principal at Monroe Central.

“I have been on the fair board for over 24 years. My life has been full of farm people and rural people. Thanks to so many people that have made my life so enjoyable! This is a real surprise having a building named after me,” he said.
