Muncie, IN— Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Indiana has selected Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital as a Blue Distinction Center+ for Knee and Hip Replacement, part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program. Blue Distinction Centers are nationally designated healthcare facilities shown to deliver improved patient safety and better health outcomes, based on objective measures that were developed by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies with input from the medical community.

Knee and hip replacement procedures are among the fastest growing medical treatments in the U.S., according to studies published in the June 2014 Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery¹ and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons².

Quality is key: only those facilities that first meet nationally established, objective quality measures are considered for designation as a Blue Distinction Center+ for Knee and Hip Replacement. This means that IU Health Ball demonstrates expertise in total knee and total hip replacement surgeries, resulting in fewer patient complications and hospital readmissions. Designated hospitals must also maintain national accreditation. In addition to meeting these quality thresholds, hospitals designated as Blue Distinction Centers+ are on average 20 percent more cost-efficient in an episode of care compared to other hospitals.

“We are incredibly proud to be recognized for our expertise in knee and hip replacements,” said Paula Tyler, orthopedic and neuroscience service line leader at IU Health Ball. “This designation is a great honor and affirms the high quality care and leading edge treatments our patients receive from our comprehensive care team.”

The orthopedics team at IU Health Ball was recognized for its exceptional patient care in 2018, too. The Joint Commission awarded IU Health Ball with a Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement, a designation that is awarded to facilities seeking to elevate the quality, consistency and safety of their services and patient care. IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital is the first organization in the state of Indiana to earn this advanced certification.
