By Delaware County JDAI—

MUNCIE, Ind.—Delaware County JDAI, also known as Delaware County “Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative” is a bipartisan effort with public, private and community partnerships for juvenile justice system improvement. JDAI is focused on reallocating public resources from mass incarceration toward investment in youth, families and communities.

But what does this mean for us, as a community? This means, we are actively working to use our juvenile detention facility only when absolutely necessary to ensure the safety of the child and the community. Nationally, research shows that there has been an unintentional history of disproportionate and inequitable use of juvenile detention centers.

In 2013, the Honorable Judge Kimberly Dowling, Delaware County Circuit 2, brought Delaware County into the JDAI movement. Since then, we have been actively and intentionally seeking change, improvement and awareness about this issue and have implemented a number of tools in order to record our progress in making these changes for the sake of our community and the children and families in Delaware County.
