Muncie, IN—Each May, the nation celebrates Older Americans Month. What began in 1963 as a way to raise awareness of the issues facing older adults, eventually led to the passing of the Older Americans Act in 1975.

LifeStream Services has been serving as the Area Agency on Aging for our region for the past 44 years since that time. We provide programs and services such as nutrition, transportation, and in-home care to over 19,000 older adults and people with disabilities.

The theme of Older Americans Month 2019 is “Connect, Create, Contribute.” We are taking time to recognize that communities are stronger when they encourage and nurture the support of older adults and offer ways to engage them as volunteers.

I have been with LifeStream for 20 years and I have met remarkable older adults who contribute so much to our community. LifeStream recently celebrated 18 volunteers over the age of 65 who go above and beyond to help those in need. One of the volunteers we recognized helps prepare and deliver meals for her homebound neighbors. Another volunteer coordinates a charity to help build schools in Africa. Their impact is felt right next door and even across the world.

So in honor of Older Americans Month, I encourage you to visit with your neighbors, the volunteers at the hospital, or the group eating at the local McDonalds or Richards each morning. Get to know them, listen to their stories, and let’s continue giving them great opportunities to volunteer in our community.
