Winners of ‘Young Artist Exhibition’ at Cornerstone Announced

Muncie, IN—The third annual Cornerstone Center for the Arts and PrimeTrust Federal Credit Union Young Artist Exhibition, took place March 14. The show included over 170 pieces of 2D and 3D artwork created by Delaware County students in kindergarten through twelfth grades. 17 area schools, multiple homeschool families, and students from Cornerstone submitted entries to the exhibition.

Six community artists and advocates anonymously judged each piece of artwork selecting the top three and one honorable mention in six categories. Judges included Betty Brewer, president and CEO of Minnetrista, and president of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council; Siena Hancock, artist-in-residence at PlySpace; Barbara Kuntz, retired arts educator; Dr. Michael Prater, associate professor of Art Education at Ball State University; Barbara Schafer, owner Gordy Fine Art & Framing; and Erin Williams, artist and residency coordinator for PlySpace.

Winners in the kindergarten through second grade category were first place – Anna Scholtes of East Washington Academy, second place – Graham Bouse of East Washington Academy, third place – Giselle Sanchez of North View Elementary, and honorable mention – Matthieu Renet of East Washington Academy.

The third through fifth grade category winners were first place – Moriah Shaver of South View Elementary, second place – Riley Pryor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts and Shenandoah Elementary, third place – Isabelle Frayer of East Washington Academy, and honorable mention Jack Bouse of East Washington Academy.

The prizewinners in the sixth through eighth grade 2D category were first place – Kamryn Wilson of Delta Middle School, second place – Matt Lyons of Delta Middle School, third place – Brayden Stanley of Delta Middle School, and honorable mention Lilly Swingley of Delta Middle School.

The sixth through eighth grade 3D awards were first place – Amy Wang of Burris Laboratory School, second place – Drew Alexander of Burris Laboratory School, third place – Hailey Conner of Delta Middle School, and honorable mention – Amelia Chester of Delta Middle School.

In the ninth through twelfth grade 2D category the top pieces were first place – Martez Allen of Muncie Central High School, second place – Mykel Ivy of Burris Laboratory School, third place – Emma Davis of Burris Laboratory School, and honorable mention – Annie Wright of Yorktown High School.

The 3D ninth through twelfth grade winners were first place – Natalie Talbot of Delta High School, second place – Annah Mattucci of Delta High School, third place and honorable mention – Chloe Davis of Delta High School.

In addition, this year the Muncie Artist Guild selected one scholarship recipient from the ninth through twelfth grade categories, which was awarded to Clarissa Terry of Delta High School.

The winning pieces will be on display in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery at Cornerstone Center for the Arts during the month of April. There will be an opening reception in conjunction with April’s First Thursday on April 4. PrimeTrust will host this reception for the artists, their families, and any art lovers interested in attending. At the completion of the Cornerstone show, the winning pieces will be on display at PrimeTrust’s three branches.
