Muncie, IN—Altrusa International of Muncie, Inc. was recently awarded a grant for $4,000 from the Altrusa International Foundation to conduct a project to benefit Delaware County Foster Closet.

On December 27, 2018 members of the Muncie Club prepared 250 care bags for the Delaware County Foster Closet with items purchased with the grant funds. Each care bag included a pair of pajamas, a package of new underwear, a package of new socks and a toiletry kit for kids ranging in size from 2T – adult.

Altrusa International of Muncie, IN Inc. Club President, Lorraine Tomlin said, “Grants of $250 — $4,000 are available through sponsoring Altrusa Clubs from Altrusa International Foundation, Inc. to improve the economic well-being and quality of life through the Foundation’s commitment to community service and literacy.  The Service Committee of the Muncie Club had the forethought to apply to the International Foundation and was awarded the grant to distribute the much needed care bags to Delaware County Foster Closet for local impact here in Delaware County.”

The Delaware County Foster Closet is a non-profit open to all foster parents and children in Indiana. They provide necessary items to ease the financial burden for foster families, providing a supportive fostering community. They accept and distribute donations of gently used clothes, shoes, baby furniture, and toys and new diapers, baby wipes, underwear, toiletries, and bottles and other feeding supplies. They also accept cash donations to purchase totes, laundry detergent, and gas assistance for families.  The Foster Closet is located at New Life Presbyterian Church in Yorktown.

Service Committee Chair of the Muncie Club, Molly Harty said, “The Service Committee saw the potential to really change lives through the Delaware County Foster Closet. The opioid epidemic in our community has unfortunately caused more youth to be displaced from their homes. Loving families are stepping up to foster and both the families and the children need the items the Foster Closet collects and coordinates to be healthy, happy and to thrive without fear of financial burden. Everyone deserves to know someone cares. The Foster Closet cares and so do Altrusans. We are pleased and privileged to receive the grant in order to purchase and coordinate these items for the Delaware County Foster Closet to benefit foster families and children in need.”

Altrusa International of Muncie, IN Inc. is proud to be a member of Altrusa International, an international non-profit organization focused on community service established April 11, 1917 in Nashville, Tennessee.
