Muncie, Indiana—Feed My Sheep Muncie is ready to feed about 1,500 people a hot meal of turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans and corn on Thursday. But with the numbers of meal requests still rapidly rolling in, organizers say there is still a need for cash donations and food items for its 23rd annual Thanksgiving Day Community Outreach.

The event – started by former Muncie educators George and Teresa Huggins in 1995 – begins at 11 am Thursday, in the Muncie Central cafeteria. FMS reaches 1,500 Delaware County-area families each year on Thanksgiving Day and does the same for another 500 on Christmas Sunday Dec. 23.

Those who are less-fortunate, homebound or elderly receive the meals, along with a bag or two of groceries, said Jeannine Lee Lake, who has chaired FMS for the last three years.Lake said the FMS Steering Committee has spent a month collecting food items for the grocery giveaway; the event will also feature the George and Teresa Huggins Blessing Room to give away toiletries, clothing, shoes and other items.“Our annual food drive began Oct. 15 and ends this coming Monday,” Lake said. “The Muncie Sanitation Department has helped us get collection totes to about 50 locations and we will begin returning to those sites in the next few days to collect food for our grocery bag giveaway. The same families who receive hot meals on Thanksgiving Day will then also have groceries to take home for their cupboards.”

Besides the cost of the meal itself, donations go to rental and custodial fees paid to Muncie Community Schools, plastic cutlery and paper products, day-of event insurance, mailings, stamps and other costs. Online donations may be made via the website at fmsmuncie.org and checks to Feed My Sheep may be sent to PO Box 145 Yorktown, IN 47396.

To receive a meal, please email name, address, contact info and number of meals requested to feedmysheepmuncie@gmail.com or call (765) 357-4337.

Volunteers are needed for delivery of meals from 10:30am-1 pm and kitchen cleanup from 1-3 pm Thursday. To volunteer, please register at fmsmuncie.org. Phone‪: Jeannine Lee Lake at (765) ‬716-7109.
