Muncie, IN—PlySpace is an artist-in-residence program based in the Emily Kimbrough Historic District in downtown Muncie, Indiana and produced by Muncie Arts and Culture Council. The 2018 PlySpace Summer Term welcomed Resident Fellow Dave Rowe to participate in the artist-in-residence program for 9 weeks. During his time at PlySpace, Dave has worked in the studios at Madjax producing sculptural work in preparation for a fall exhibition at the Dairy Arts Center in Boulder, CO. As the Resident Fellow, he has also been partnered with Ball State University School of Art to offer unique casting experiences for students.

For his community collaborative project, an important aspect of the artist-in-residence program, Dave conducted aluminum casting workshops for a variety of nonprofit organizations across Muncie, including the Cornerstone Center for the Arts Summer Art Camp, Ivy Tech’s Upward Bound Summer Program, and the Ross Community Center Kidventure program. His summer activities will conclude this weekend with two public events: an Open Studio and an aluminum casting workshop. Muncie Arts and Culture Council invites the public to attend and learn more about PlySpace Resident Fellow Dave Rowe as he nears the end of his time in Muncie

Dave Rowe’s Open Studio event will be held on Friday, July 13th, from 5PM to 8PM, with a short artist talk at 6PM. He will introduce his studio practice and discuss his experience at PlySpace. The wood sculpture work developed during his residency will also be previewed. Light refreshments will be served. The PlySpace Studios are located on the second floor of the Madjax building, 514 E Jackson St, Muncie, Indiana.

On Saturday, July 14th, from 2PM to 6PM, Dave will conduct a public demonstration and workshop on the aluminum casting process using a custom-built backyard foundry for Kegs! Casts! & Kraut! The aluminum pours will be located on the outdoor patio at Madjax, adjacent to The Guardian Brewing Company. Attendance for this event is free, open to the public, and open to all ages with children under the age of 14 accompanied by an adult. Guests can purchase Bratwurst from Tastes Good on a Bun for $4 and a variety of beers from The Guardian Brewing Company (with appropriate ID). Guests interested in a more hands-on experience can participate by making a small, custom clay tile which will be cast by Dave during the demonstration and available to take home that day. All supplies are provided for the demonstrations and tile making workshop. Tiles can be made throughout the afternoon with aluminum pours on the hour at 3 PM, 4 PM, and 5 PM.

Dave Rowe will also return to Muncie this fall for a public lecture as part of the Ball State School of Art Visiting Artist, Designers, and Scholars Program. The lecture will be held on September 11th at 5:30 PM in the Ball State Arts and Journalism Building.
